"Word Jockey" is an experimental project that investigates the relative nature of comprehension in the context of artificial intelligence. It examines how humans understand AI and how AI understands humans, focusing on the mechanical, reductive nature of language models such as GPT.
The project seeks to explore what happens when we strip communication down to its bare bones—subject – verb - object (in this case questions)—the project challenges both the user and the AI to engage in a simplified, almost mechanical dialogue. The central inquiry being: Can AI generate meaningful or coherent output from such reduced input, and what does this reveal about how it processes language and therefore information?
The interaction is intentionally deemed to be reductive, as an aim to reverse roles. This exploration raises a crucial question: What does it mean to communicate like a machine, and how does this shape our perception of understanding? More importantly, how does it impact our reliance on these systems as sources of information and decision-makers?
